In the end, we drove back to Daytona. Once we were home, Mark headed off to his late lunch with Lieutenant Rossi and we told Russ to go home (they had a nice, snug Craftsman across the street from our old house on Halifax). I also told him that, unless he wanted to come back for dinner, he didn't need to come back at all. He looked mildly relieved and said he'd see us at 8 the next morning.

After he left, Whit and I had a quick lunch. He then decided to go out to his office for his call with Vincent. That left me all alone in the house. For the first time.

I wanted to explore things and look into rooms I had only seen on blueprints. But then I remembered that dinner was going to be my responsibility, so I walked into the kitchen with the idea of coming up with something to cook. I could explore after I'd got that all arranged. I was thinking about a big pan or two of lasagna and trying to figure out what I could make for myself when I felt a hand on my shoulder at the same time as Carter Jones, deceased, said, "Hi, Eddie."

I nearly jumped out of my skin.

Turning, I looked up at him. "If you weren't so fucking hot, I'd be really mad right now."

His bright green eyes drilled through me as he grinned a little. "How are you?"

"Fine... Is there something I should know?"

He walked over to the window that looked out at the beach. "What a great view you have from here. How do you like the place?" He was wearing a 1940s navy suit with wide lapels and a red tie. His reddish blond hair was held in place with a nice bit of pomade. And, even though his suit was cut full (like they were in the 40s), I could still see glimpses of the rock-hard body underneath as he moved.

He was a ghost, of course, so none of it was real.

I walked over and stood next to him. He smelled of smoke and something spicy. "We're getting used to it. The view is great. There's just a lot of people here since it's July."

He put his arm around my shoulder. Whenever Carter appeared, I could always feel his body. His hand was as solid as Whit's, if not more so (which is how it felt even if that didn't make sense). And the heat his body was putting off was palpable. I could hear him breathing and, as I mentioned, I could smell him. Below the smoke and spice, there was a faint whiff of what he would have called B.O. It wasn't unpleasant. It added to the experience. For me, at least.

"I know you're a ghost, but you feel more real than Whit."

"Nick says I'm like that because it's how I was when I was living.
